Parents First Project

“I think this is an excellent scheme which really helps parents to become more confident with regards to the internet and computers. It gives them an understanding of what their children are doing on the internet which gives the parents more of a sense of security.”

Feedback from a parent

Parents First was a mentoring project delivered by national volunteering charity, TimeBank, from January 2011 to December 2011, with funding from The Cicely Northcote Trust.

The project took place in the London boroughs of Lambeth and Southwark, primarily within Brixton and Peckham. Through the support of a mentor aged 18-25, parents were able to develop the necessary skills to use a computer and the internet so they could play a more active role in their child's development. The project supported 20 mentoring pairs in total.

Key successes of the project include:

  • 75% of parents increased their awareness of websites they could use to access information about activities for the family.
  • 67% of parents increased their understanding of how to protect their children online.
  • 58% of parents increased their knowledge of services they could use online to support their child's educational activities.
